Kit (Christopher) Harrison

Biography – I have lived and worked in Carling for most of my life, with nearly 23 years spent working for my family’s marina. I even coordinated service work whilst attending university for chemistry. I worked briefly for a commissioning company which involved me travelling to the Philippines to complete third party inspections on high rise buildings mechanical systems. I was a member of the Kinsmen in Parrys Sound until 2016. In 2016 I moved to Toronto and began working for Solar Provider Group where I travelled extensively in the United States, from Georgia to California. I eventually came to run the Business Development team, coordinating activities across several time zones throughout Europe. I eventually transferred to work directly for the President of the company and acted as his chief researcher and salesperson for various start-up endeavors. Most noteworthy of these was the Green Power Exchange, which was aimed at creating a peer-to-peer energy trading market for renewable power in the United States wholesale power market. During this work I once again travelled extensively in the USA, giving speeches at conferences and securing deals with renewable energy companies to list their power on our exchange during the prototyping stage. I secured nearly 4 Gigawatts (enough to power 3-4 million homes) of capacity interest during this time. I moved back to Parry Sound in 2018 with my then girlfriend and eventually wife, Ana, to take over Harrison Landing Marina. Working closely with my family, I doubled revenue in two years through a focused approach of finding what activities yielded value by creating and measuring Key Performance Indicators.

I am uniquely qualified for Carling Council as I have been a front facing component of my family’s business for nearly a quarter century. I handle the books, sales, and client interactions. I am always on the lookout to find my clients the best solution but also the best value for the work. I keep a watchful eye on all inflows and outflows from the marina to ensure long term financial health, but also to ensure we are spending our money in ways that constantly make life better. This is a good fit for council as we must always be forward looking, whilst conserving and safeguarding what we have.

Answers to our questions

Question 01

In your opinion, what are the top three issues facing Carling over the next decade? What ideas/strategies would you propose to address these concerns?

Issue 1: Maintaining budgets – it is easy to look at the revenue from tax collection and think because it comes in every year that it can be spent every year with abandon. It is vital to maintain a healthy balance sheet and rainy-day fund and constantly be investing the publics money in things that improve the lives of everyone in Carling Township. My experience in running a family business, running multinational teams, and coordinating with stakeholders makes me well suited for this.

Issue 2: Industrial Park – the Industrial Park seems to be always developing tomorrow and never today. I would examine and articulate to the public what the actual head winds are facing its development and subsequently develop a plan to deal with said headwinds. I believe there has not been adequate communication to the public surrounding what the plan is.

Issue 3: Common Sense Approach to Bylaw Review – the bylaws which govern Carling are numerous can be opaque. This creates an undue burden on folks attempting to develop and enjoy their properties. I would engage with staff and rate payers to determine if there is a way to clarify and simplify our bylaws, to both allow folks to enjoy their properties whilst also maintaining and conserving what makes Carling, Carling. Quiet, peaceful, and beautiful.

Question 02

What prompted you to run for council?

No specific issue prompted me to run for council. There are a myriad of small things, issues and complaints that I or others have had and I decided that instead of complaining about it, I should show up and do something about it.
